Children’s Dental Emergencies

Lightwood Dental | Children s Dental Emergencies | Dentist Ferntree Gully and Knox CityEvery parent wants his/her child to experience every good thing in life. We want them to run around freely in parks, laugh out loud, explore their surroundings, and just be happy. We want them to have everything.

But as much as we want them to enjoy things, risks abound. Unfortunately, children are not excused from the dangers of everyday life.

Their active lifestyle and carefree nature only add up to the risk of them hurting themselves. They can fall and break a leg, trip and hurt their knee, or bump and knock out their tooth.

That’s why it is very important for you, parents, to have knowledge of children’s emergency dental care and to have a trusted local dentist. Lightwood Dental provides useful dental first aid tips to help you deal with your child’s dental emergency and a Same Day Emergency Appointment to further assist you.

At Lightwood Dental, we understand the need for urgency and efficiency. Hence we have listed some of the most common childhood dental emergencies and their quick first aid steps.

Knocked-out Tooth

  • Rinse your child’s mouth with clean lukewarm water.
  • Press a cold compress on the outside cheek of the affected area to reduce swelling.
  • Pick the knocked-out tooth up by the crown (the top part of the tooth) and not the root.
  • Handle tooth carefully as damage may prevent re-implantation.
  • Wash the tooth gently in a bowl of lukewarm water for no more than 10 seconds. Do this only if there is dirt or any foreign matter on the tooth otherwise just soak the tooth in saline or milk.
  • Go to the dentist immediately as they may be able to re-implant the tooth.

Toothache

  • Clean your child’s mouth. Have your child rinse his/her mouth with warm water and gently floss teeth to remove food particles from the area.
  • Control swelling by pressing a cold compress to the outside cheek of the affected area.
  • Do not give aspirin to your child and never put aspirin against gums near aching tooth because it can burn the gum tissue.
  • Call your dentist immediately.

Broken Tooth

  • Rinse your child’s mouth with clean lukewarm water.
  • Apply pressure by gently pressing a clean cloth to the affected area.
  • Pick up the broken tooth fragments by the crown without touching the roots.
  • Wash the tooth gently in a bowl of lukewarm water for no more than 10 seconds. Do this only if there is dirt or any foreign matter on the tooth otherwise just soak the tooth in saline or milk.
  • Call your dentist immediately.

Broken Braces

  • Move the wire gently into a comfortable place using the eraser end of a pencil.
  • If you can’t move the wire, cover the end with a small cotton ball or a piece of gauze.
  • Call your dentist immediately.
