Everyone knows that Valentine’s Day is a time for love – and dates. This means you want to be able to smile, laugh, and eat without embarrassment.
You want to look great and have self-confidence when you do part your lips. You also want to have fresh breath so that you can give that kiss without having to cut it short, or worry about what your loved ones might think.
At Lightwood Dental we offer you the following suggestions to increase your appeal and confidence this Valentine’s Day.
Whitening Your Teeth
Teeth whitening strips, paint-on tooth gel, whitening toothpastes, brushes and pens are available in drug stores, as well as mouth trays with gel. They all do work to whiten your teeth, but, as we will shortly suggest, a quicker and more effective way to make your teeth kissably white is to get teeth-whitening treatments from Lightwood Dental.
If you wear makeup, darker lipstick can actually make your teeth appear whiter and brighter, as their dark shades will contrast with your teeth! Obviously, this is not a permanent solution, but it can work in the short term.
The Link Between Dental And Heart Health
Valentine’s Day is all about having heart, and you want to be sure to keep your heart healthy. As it turns out, one good step towards heart health may be maintaining good dental health!
Many studies have shown a connection between gum disease (periodontitis) and serious conditions, including heart disease.
Research suggests that periodontitis is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. There is also a strong association between diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and evidence that diabetics can benefit from dental teeth cleanings. So, for your overall health it’s important to take care of your teeth and gums
Bad breath is the enemy of romance. For Valentine’s Day you want to conquer it!
Bad breath can be caused by a number of things but is most commonly caused by poor oral hygiene.
So, what can you do to avoid it?
Brush, floss, and scrape your tongue. Not only should you be brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily, you should also be scraping your tongue.
Stay away from smelly food. Garlic, onions, spices, coffee and alcohol can all lead to bad breath. It may be wise to avoid these foods on a Valentine’s Day date!
Don’t smoke. Smoking is terrible for your health and causes bad breath.
Keep your mouth moist. Having a dry mouth can increase the build up of bacteria and cause horrible breath. Make sure you keep hydrated.
Be careful with covering bad breath up
While gum and mouthwashes can hide bad breath, you shouldn’t let them camouflage the underlying problems.
See your dentist regularly. Visit your Lightwood Dental dentist twice a year to keep on top of your oral health.
Be Careful With The Chocolates
If you were new to Valentine’s Day and only visited local stores, you might imagine that Valentine’s Day was about chocolate rather than love and romance. But as tempting as those Valentine’s Day treats may seem, remember that they are really bad for your teeth.
What can you do?
Eat alternatives. While chocolate is not as bad for your teeth as some other candies, it’s still not good for them. There are many other sweet, tasty and even romantic foods that are way better for your teeth. If you do eat candy, choose dark chocolate, which is lower in sugar and actually has elements that protect oral hygiene.
Eat moderately. If you eat chocolate, eat in moderation. Eat a few super-tasty pieces of chocolate as opposed to an entire package full of cheaper ones.
Brush after snacking. Be certain to brush soon after eating chocolate, and if you can’t brush rinse your mouth with water.
Kiss more! Kissing stimulates saliva production, which naturally washes your mouth out. It’s a win-win!
